Tirupati gearing up for smart city competition (May 30, 2016)

Hyderabad: Anticipating stiff completion in second phase of second round competition for the selection of smart cities Tirupati municipal corporation officials are gearing to prepare the detailed project report (DPR) for smart city under the city challenge method with new approach. New consultant had been roped in place of Lee associates, now IL&FS and AECOM India Pvt Ltd will do the job for temple town.

Tirupati stood at 22nd place in the first round, falling short of just two ranks to be selected in the top 20 smart cities list. It could not participate in the first phase competition in second round to select another 20 cities. Centre recently announced 13 cities as fast track selections. “Centre had asked entries from those states which did not get single city selected in the first, as result we could not participate,” M Sreedevi, Tirupati municipal urban commissioner said. ap had two cities Vizag and Kakinada as the selected smart cities in the first round to receive the funds.
Then chief secretary IYR Krishna Rao even made a special request with union urban development officials to consider the case of Tirupati as a special case as it falls under backward Rayalaseema region. However, fast track criteria made the request remain unattended.

For the first round, Tirupati had Lee associates as the consultant to prepare the DPR and it estimated that nearly Rs 2579 crore are required for making Tirupati as smart city. However, after much criticism on the DPR for laying over emphasis on road network, officials roped in new consultants for preparing the new plan for next round selection.

Experts say that it would be very difficult to get through the next round for Tirupati in next round. “If it was the first phase of the second round, it would have easily qualified but for the seven cities there will be hectic completion,” K Satish, a consultant with urban development sector said. Worried officials are leaving no stone unturned as chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu wants the selection to happen in next round.
